The Engine Rebuild
3/15/2023 Wow, it's been a long time since an update. The main reason is because there has been little progress. The block, head and crank have been at the machine shop. It needs to be bored to 3 over, 86.5mm. The head has never been shaved, original thickness but needs to be shaved. The crank measures stock and as do the valve guides. The crank is going to be polished.
8/21/2022 Yes I am still alive! Being the president of the British Car Club of Charleston, I've been having Tech Sessions in my garage. Over the past couple of years, I've probably had about 25 different British cars in the garage doing little things like brakes and lights to changing the clutch on an Austin Healey to a complete engine and transmission rebuild on a 1952 MGTD. I just ordered about $5,000 in new parts for the Mercedes.

A box of the new engine parts came today. I brought the pistons, valves, valve guides and crank gear to the machine shop. They are going to pull the crank gear and replace it. I won't list all the new parts purchased for the engine, pretty much everything. (pistons, rings, valves, valve guides, head bolts, cam chain, cam gears...)
A couple months ago I took the head, block and crankshaft to a local machine shop. The cylinders were already 2 over, 86mm. They were bored to 86.5mm. The valve guides were replaces and seats recut for the new valves. The crankshaft was standard and only needed polishing.
A group of members of the British Car Club of Charleston has rebuilt several British car engines with the lead of the group being Frank Wissman. I picked up the rebuilt head and block from the machine shop and brought them to Franks garage. A short time later Frank called me as he noticed a flaw in the cylinder walls of one of the cylinders. The flaw was enough so you could feel it. I brought the block back to the machine shop. It was decided to further machine the cylinder and insert a sleeve. It would then be machine to 86.5mm.
Frank Wissman did a write-up on the rebuild for the clubs news letter, The Windscreen. So I'm saving myself some time and letting Frank tell you about it.
